That's the most common call we get in Los Angeles, and it's usually not a stain at all. Dry, abrasive soil gets tracked in and ground into the traffic lanes, and over time it dulls and frays the fiber tips. Cleaning pulls out the loose grit and restores a lot of the color, so the difference between the lane and the untouched carpet under a sofa shrinks. What cleaning cannot undo is actual wear. If the pile is physically crushed or the tips are abraded, that area will still read slightly different. We'll tell you which one you're looking at before we start rather than after.

I'm in an apartment near a freeway and the carpet has a gray, sooty cast. Is that different from normal dirt?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Freeway-corridor units take in fine road dust and soot that settles deep in the pile and along the edges of the room, especially near windows and the door. It's a fine particle, so vacuuming only gets part of it. It tends to make light builder-grade loop carpet look uniformly dim rather than spotted. Hot water extraction with enough dwell time and a thorough dry-soil removal pass first is what moves it. If it has been building up for years, expect improvement rather than a factory look, and edges near the baseboard may stay darker.

How soon can you get out here, and do you do same-day?

Los Angeles is a wide service area and traffic decides a lot of our day, so we book by window rather than a promised minute. Most requests get scheduled within a few days. Same-day does happen, usually when a job on that side of town finishes early or a tenant turnover comes up short-notice, so it's worth calling and asking what's open near you. Turnover cleanings between tenants are common for us, and if you tell us the move-out date up front we can work backward from it.

What does it cost, and why can't you quote over the phone from square footage alone?

The estimate is free and you get a firm number before we touch anything. Price moves with how many rooms and stairs, the carpet type, and how much dry soil and wear is in it. A postwar stucco tract with continuous cut pile running room to room prices differently from an apartment with loop carpet in two bedrooms. Heavy traffic-lane buildup, pet issues, or a unit that needs to be turned around quickly all add labor. If we spot something during the walkthrough that changes the number, we stop and tell you first.

We have area rugs over hardwood in an older bungalow. Do you clean those in place?

Accepted Answer

Often, but it depends on the rug and the floor beneath it. Many 1910s-1930s craftsman and Spanish bungalows here have original hardwood, and we don't want moisture sitting against it, so we'll pull the rug back or lift it rather than saturate it where it lies. Wool, cotton, and hand-knotted rugs need lower moisture and gentler chemistry than machine-made synthetics. We look at the backing and fringe first and tell you whether in-home cleaning is appropriate or whether the rug should be handled off the floor. Either way, we say so before starting, not partway through.
