My bedroom carpet is old and matted. Is it worth cleaning, or should I just replace it?

What doesn't come back is carpet with the backing showing through, seams separating, delamination, or heavy pet damage that has soaked into the pad and subfloor. In a lot of Monrovia's older houses there's hardwood under that carpet, so if the carpet is finished, it's worth pulling a corner in a closet and looking before you shop for new carpet.
